BUILT IN STAGES
An etching is not created in a single pass.
Different areas of the drawing are exposed to the acid for different lengths of time, allowing some lines to become deeper and darker than others. The plate is repeatedly worked, cleaned, re-ground, drawn into, and etched in stages to build the range of tones and detail.
The result is essentially a drawing carved into copper.
What is an Etching?
An etching is an original print made by hand from a copper plate.
The process begins by coating the copper plate with a protective ground. Using an etching needle, the artist draws through the ground, exposing the copper beneath. The plate is then placed in an acid bath, which bites into the exposed lines.
EACH PRINT IS MADE BY HAND
Once the plate is complete, ink is worked into the etched lines and the surface is carefully wiped by hand. Dampened paper is placed over the plate and both are run through a printing press under tremendous pressure, transferring the ink onto the paper.
Each print is individually hand-pulled.
This means every impression passes through the artist's hands, from the preparation of the plate to the inking, wiping, and printing of each sheet.
